Paging Dr. Robot: Artificial intelligence moves into care
The next time you get sick, your care may involve a form of the technology people use to navigate road trips or pick the right vacuum cleaner online. Now, parts of the health system are starting to use it directly with patients. During some clinic and telemedicine appointments, AI-powered software asks patients initial questions about their symptoms that physicians or nurses normally pose.
AdviNOW CEO James Bates said their AI program decides what questions to ask and what information it needs. It passes that information and a suggested diagnosis to a physician who then treats the patient remotely through telemedicine. The company currently uses the technology in a handful of Safeway and Albertsons grocery store clinics in Arizona and Idaho. But it expects to expand to about 1,000 clinics by the end of next year. Eventually, the company wants to have AI diagnose and treat some minor illnesses, Bates said.

AI and augmented reality may sound complicated but in actuality, it really isn’t. If you use Snapchat, then you are familiar with how graphics can be overlay onto an image in real time. We’ve done this with our instructions to show the patient where to place the measuring devices for the AI to assess and acquire these standard vital measurements (heart, lung, temperature, blood pressure, ear and throat images). These measurements along with other information the patient provides, are sent to the provider to review prior to speaking with the patient, making the medical visit more accurate and efficient. If the patient is uncomfortable with performing these tasks, the onsite medical assistant can help.

Patients now have the ability to conduct self-examinations using equipment such as a stethoscope, temporal thermometer and blood pressure machine. Cameras are also on hand to examine a patient’s throat, ears and nose.“Once all their vitals are taken and the series of questions are over … one of our providers will come live on the screen and talk to the patient live as a virtual exam room,” Walker said.
The total process typically takes under 25 minutes, and it costs $75 per visit for those who don’t have health insurance.
“The whole idea is to offer affordability and convenience for the patients,” Walker said.

AdviNOW AI and AR Patient Treatment Platform Can Save Medicare
Safeway Stores Offering Health Care Powered by Artificial Intelligence
“If we roll this out for 50% of the physicians in the United States, our platform can save Medicare on its own,” says AdviNOW CEO, James Bates.
Here is how it works:
Patients go into exam rooms on their own and a computerized program guides them through providing key physical information using FDA-approved wireless devices that can collect medical measurements such as temperature, ear, nose and throat images; chest sounds via a stethoscope; and blood pressure and blood oxygen content.
A virtual visit with a physician, nurse practitioner, or physician assistant concludes the Akos Med Clinic appointment via telemedicine, similar to speaking with a clinician via Facetime or Skype. The clinicians, employees of AkosMD, beam into the Safeway clinics, typically from company headquarters in Glendale.
